Mavado & Mr Vegas make Vibe Magazines top 80 songs for 2008. Coming in at #44 is the Gully Gadd's contribution to the Unfinished Business riddim, So Special, a chart-topper locally and internationally. This is what Vibe had to say about Mavado: "Dancehall's Gangster For Life has been everywhere this year, from Grand Theft Auto IV to collabos with Jay-Z and G Unit. It is interesting that in the year when Vegas declares that he is "done with dancehall", the accolades just keep piling up. Mr Vegas' Tek Weh Yuself, which some may contend was 2007 rather than 2008, secures the #76 position on the Top 80, such is the impact of the single. Produced by Kirk Bennett, the song had an accompanying dance that rocked the dancehall even into the first half of 2008.
According to Vibe: "After a dance craze, dozens of spin-offs, and an utterly unnecessary remix featuring Kat DeLuna and Lil' Kim, it all comes down to the beat: a stripped-down, spring-loaded track Vegas described as "modernised mento". Add one of dancehall's perennial hitmakers and watch the magic." Another Vegas single, Mus Come a Road is also doing well internationally, as it sits at #6 on Germany's prestigious Black Music Chart and, moreover, is the only Reggae single on that chart and reggae track Need U Bad - Jazmine Sullivan was #8. The rest of the chart was dominated by rap.
Beenie Man has recorded four songs in four days: one a collaboration with Fay-Ann, which remains untitled and is voiced on the La Douma Riddum; a remix of Garlin's infectious, "Plenty Gyal", another collaboration with Trini Jacobs and a solo track. The La Douma Riddim is due to be released last week of January & also features songs by Jamaican sensation Pamputtae, 3Suns, Benjai featuring Scarface, JW and Blaze and Bunji Garlin. The Jamaican entertainer said he is currently working on a new album, a new movie called Kingston and is booked to perform at various shows around the globe over the next few months.
Do you remember the Innocent Kru, well they are back but with one less member. The Kru consists of Benzly Hype, Macka Head, Copper Kid and they lost Clumsy Daps recently to an altercation at his home in Jamaica. The good news is they are back with a new single 'Kick Dem Out' & eve better news is they are premiering their new tv program Me & Mi Kru' Feb 2 in Jamiaca. Actor Everaldo Creary will replace Clumsy. It's about the Kru's journey. The only difference is that they changed one thing. In the show Benzly wins the lotto so they move the setting to uptown Kingston. As quoted in the jamaica Observer heres Benzly "It's basically about our journey through the music industry. Most of the stuff that happens is what took place in our career, except that we invented me winning the lottery as a way for us to move to the uptown. So I win the lottery and move uptown with my mother, played by Audrey Reid. It's like a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air meets Beverly Hillbillies," said Benzly-Hype
Me and Mi Kru is directed by famed Jamaican director Rick Elwood, of Dancehall Queen and One Love fame. Along with the remaining crew members, the cast will also feature Audrey Reid, Leonie Forbes, Ronald Goshop, Professor Nuts, Candace Buchanan and a host of entertainment personalities who have influenced the career of Innocent Kru, including producers Sly Dunbar, who produced the track you are listening to, Steelie and Cleevie and deejay Spragga Benz.
The sitcom was the brainchild of Benzly-Hype and was co-written by himself and Paul Beale. According to Benzly-Hype, the idea came to him when Innocent Kru was on the set of One Love. Now that the sitcom will soon be on air, Benzly-Hype said: "I'm so excited. The Innocent Kru is the original crew, the first group to go on BET, been doing this a long time and we're still together doing music.' The sitcom will also feature a number of other entertainers who will be making guest appearances.
